Mark Barnett has nearly 30 years of real estate and timberland management experience. He began his forest industry career with Hammermill Paper Company in central Alabama, and has, with his brother Jay, owned and operated a forestry consulting/timberland management business for 28 years, serving domestic and foreign private timberland investors.
Mark attended Auburn University, receiving a Masters degree in Economics and a Bachelor of Science in Forest Management.
Mark earned his real estate license in 1986. He holds a real estate broker’s license and is a Registered Forester in Georgia (#1794) and Alabama (#1236). Mark is also a member of the Forest Landowner’s Association and the Atlanta Board of Realtors.
Mark’s real estate career has included brokerage of timberland, farmland, recreational tracts, farmettes/estate lots, developed lots, and pre-development properties (residential, industrial and commercial).
Together, Mark and Jay manage thousands of acres of timberland and higher-better-use (pre-development) properties for domestic and foreign investors, planning and supervising timber harvesting, inventory, tree planting (and reforestation incentive programs), control burning, wildlife habitat improvement, hunting leases, pine straw harvesting, road layout, etc. Mark understands the taxation of timberland and harvest revenues, timber basis calculations, and means of selling timber to preserve capital gains treatment. He maintains key relationships with an extensive network of real estate buyers and sellers, industry players, wood procurement specialists, loggers, consultants, agricultural lenders and financial institutions.
Mark resides in Alpharetta, Georgia (north of Atlanta) with his wife Laura, daughter Mariel, and son Sam. Their “leisure” hours are minimized with school, church and associated functions.
